Westmount
Green AvenueThis wealthy residential neighborhood sweeps down from what is known as le petit montagne, actually one of Mt. Royal's three summits. This bastion of the Anglo-Saxon elite was built primarily during 1910–30, as the Golden Square Mile area became the downtown business core and its inhabitants fled to a more pleasant locale. Today the agreeable tree-lined streets are kept that way by the extreme wealth and political pull of the 20,000 residents, who maintain their neighborhood as a separate city rather than incorporate it with Montréal.

England's influence reigns over the city-within-a-city, notably at the Municipal Center, with its city hall, library, conservatory, meeting hall, and landscaped Westmount Park. Restaurants, convenience stores, banks, and shops line Green Avenue, the municipality's main commercial center. In Westmount, the farther up the mountain, the more extravagant the houses. Summit Circle offers a view of some of the most lavish, and also climbs to wooded Summit Park and a stunning view of the city from the Westmount Lookout.
