West Island
Pointe-Claire The region known locally as the 'West Island' covers the entire western third of the island of Montreal.

Initial development of this region began as far back as the late 17th century. When the early French explorers' voyage up the St-Lawrence River was interrupted by turbulent rapids, they were convinced they had reached China and named the area "La Chine". Today, Lachine marks the eastern boundary of the "West Island".

Throughout the West Island, but particularly on the narrow, winding streets of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and Ste-Geneviève, mixed heritage is in evidence. Both street names and architectural styles reflect the two cultures. From historical sights to modern office buildings, from old-fashioned shops to large-scale shopping complexes, and from large mansions to converted country cottages, the 'West Island' has much to offer both residents and visitors.

Today, approximately 230,000 people live in 13 West Island municipalities in a bilingual, bicultural atmosphere. Many West Islanders commute to work in downtown Montreal while others earn their living in the local industrial parks.
